Today, The Wildwood answer to The Devil comes out to join us. The Devil in some decks (such as Ciro Marchetti’s) are very sexy bad boys! Yum yum! However, this fellow sure isn’t sexy, furry or cute. In fact, he’s a tad scary! That scary, you don’t associate him with being The Devil, unless you do a direct RWS correlation.
But this isn’t the RWS: so, what do you see in today’s image? I see the end result that awaits us all, regardless of how or in what condition we get there in. It comes to us all. I find the book interesting on this character. He is an archetype of protection, initiation, the link to wilderness, nature, fertility (typical that he shows up for me at the first half of a full moon then!) that sometimes manifests as fierceness, sexuality and ecstasy. (Paraphrased from the book that comes with the deck, page 66).
Now, reading again from the book (page 67) this fellow represents a challenge in my life (yeah, duh, I’d figured that one out!) that may be very complex. This challenge may have profound implications in your life and how you deal with the world, it may manifest in the form of profound inner realignment or the facing of some physical outer predicament.
Well, I know that the challenge is more intellectual than physical and certainly it comes from the labyrinth that is the human mind. Is it really an opportunity? You can bet it damn well is! I like how the book implies that the situation may have been left to decay or become unhealthy, can now be sorted if you take control, face your fears (which is what the Guardian strikes within you if your soul is on the timid side) and deal with the insecurity with courage and integrity.
So, I shall take a deep breath, fill my lungs up with extra oxygen and fresh air, then go through the experience. However, the timing of it totally and utterly sucks. But at least, thanks to the Tarot, I know and I have the chance to learn.
